A beautiful region of mountains and lakes

BAD ISCHL

Bad Ischl was the Imperial town of Austria for almost 80 years. The Emperor Franz Joseph built a palace in Bad Ischl and made it the capital of the Austro Hungarian empire.  It is a small elegant town with pavement cafes, nice shops and a riverside promenade. It has a gondola lift to a small ski area from the edge of town. There are thermal baths and an indoor ice skating rink.

BAD GOISERN

Located about an hour and a quarter from Salzburg airport is the health resort of Bad Goisern.  It is set in a wide alpine valley with mountains all around. First class outdoor swimming pool complex for summer and in the centre of things for holidays in summer or winter.  Local shops etc.

STROBL

Strobl lies on the shores of lake Wolfgang at the eastern end. It is a quiet, select resort with lovely hotels, and offers all the usual lakeside activities. Swimming, sailing, water skiing, and steamer cruises on the lake. In winter the nearby Postalm Ski Centre caters for beginners and improvers.

St GILGEN

St Gilgen is also on lake Wolfgang but at the western end. About 25 mins drive from Salzburg. There are nice hotels, shops and restaurants as well as the usual lakeside activities. A gondola lift from the village takes to to the ski area on the Zwolferhorn, or in summer to some fine alpine walking.

BAD AUSSEE

Bad Aussee is the main small town in the 'Ausseerland' holiday region. There are hotels, shops, cafes and all the holiday attractions. There are numerous lakes and several good ski areas.

OBERTRAUN

Obertraun lies at the foot of the Dachstein massif. It is at the northern end of lake Hallstättersee and at the foot of the Dachstein Krippenstein ski area.

BAD MITTENDORF / TAUPLITZ

Bad Mitterndorf is a delightful spa town with lovely thermal baths. A great deal has been invested in the infrastructure and it is thriving. It shares the skiing with eighbouring Tauplitz and has around 15-20 ski lifts.
